Project overview
A new 6,500 square foot development within blocks of the planned Green Line Metro extension joins El Segundo’s already thriving business community of media, tech, and design practices. Conceived by developer
Steelwave
and designed by
HLW
Architects, the project remodels and augments an existing building to modernize its appearance and create an open, amenity-rich campus where tenants can enjoy outdoor seating, a onsite cafe, state-of-the art fitness facilities, and plentiful meeting space.
The brief
Grand + Nash aims to reduce the carbon footprint of each tenant and enrich the development with natural elements. A drought-tolerant landscaping plan and uninterrupted windows around the building’s outer walls bring the outdoors inside while staying responsible to the dry Southern California climate. In addition, the design and finishes draw heavily on Japanese and Scandinavian visual language to convey a sense of balance and harmony with the surroundings.
The solution
As the restrooms are interior spaces that don't benefit from the windows to maintain a connection with nature, architects
HLW
played with bold contrast between light wood and dark hexagonal tile. The spaces project an earthy warmth while maintaining an easy flow between restroom, shower, and locker areas and confidently express the Japanese and Scandinavian inspirations behind the design. TSL supplied

Monolith
A Series basins in a dark gray aggregate finish, and black powder coated pipe skirts to fit under the sinks. The flexibility of the TSL line ensures that the fixtures and sinks work well with the bold, clean aesthetic. The importance of contemporary minimalist finishes like matte black is underlined by how seamlessly TSL products blend with both the natural warmth of the locker room, and the more traditionally commercial space of the restroom.
